It would be an unconscious symbol, he told them, of the housewife mixing in her own eggs as a gift to her husband. To do that, Dichter recommended adding instructions on the packet for housewives to add an egg. He told Betty Crocker that the best way to remove that barrier was to give the housewife greater participation. On the one hand, housewives liked the idea of making it easier for themselves.īut on the other hand, they also felt like it was cheating. Particularly guilt around the message of ease and convenience. He discovered that the barrier to the cake mix purchases was guilt. So Dichter ran his research where housewives could freely associate about the cake mix. ![]() Instead, Dichter's approach was to understand the total personality, particularly the customer's self-image. So they turned to one of the day's leading social and behavioral scientists for help.ĭichter had practiced next to Freud in Vienna.īut he came to America and set up the Institute for Motivational Research in an old mansion north of New York City.Ī place devoted to finding out why people behave as they do, why they buy as they do, and why they respond to advertising as they do.ĭichter's approach was to avoid going out and directly asking people why they buy certain products. ![]() Their biggest problem was with the Betty Crocker cake mix. Like many food manufacturers in the early 50s, Betty Crocker invented a new range of instant, convenient foods.īut while consumers (especially housewives) had told market researchers they liked the idea, few people bought them. #obercretaive #marketing #advertising #creative #ideas #copywriting #copywriters #ghostwriting I'm offering LinkedIn ghostwriting and coachwriting services for a select group of clients. Maybe I should create an exhibit out of them?ĭo you have many ideas but need help turning them into posts like this? I hear Leonardo Da Vinci rarely finished his paintings. I have a desk full of unfinished drawings like this. The only problem with this technique is that it works too fast.Īfter 5-10 minutes of drawing, ideas about what to write about start flooding in.Ĭan you tell where I suddenly got the idea to write about what I was doing? (Before I knew how to draw, I would use this time to learn). Sometimes, I start sketching things relevant to what I should write about.īut most of the time, I just start drawing whatever comes to mind. That's why whenever I get writer's block, instead of just starting to write, I grab my Remarkable tablet and begin to draw. Which opens up whole new ways to think about things. This is why letting your writer's block take you away from writing to pursue more auditory or visual things is not a distraction but a good thing.īy activating your brain's auditory and visual parts, you are dealing with subject matters directly from their source. It's your subconscious brain's way of telling you the answer as to what to write about has nothing to do with words. ![]() Writer's block is the result of depending too much on words. When you stop and think about it, the word Zebra is always one step removed from an actual Zebra. It's a made-up symbol we use to signify an actual Zebra. The image of a Zebra probably pops into your head immediately.Īnd if I asked you to describe one to me, you would probably say something like "a horse with black and white stripes."īut the word Zebra itself has nothing to do with an actual Zebra. When I say or write "Zebra," you know exactly what I'm talking about. While writing can be creative, words come from a fragmented and rational part of our brain. So much so that I look forward to writer's block. But instead of trying to solve the problem with words, I listen to my brain and turn it into an opportunity.
